Tasting notes - what do you find useful?

Everyone seems to write tasting notes a little differently, and I admit that mine so far have been structured (or not?) purely to please myself and to help with my tasting memory. I am interested to know, though, what other people find interesting and useful when they read notes.

What information do you think is essential? what is often provided but mostly superfluous? Do you find a highly structured note more useful or clearer to read? Or do you prefer notes with some context, perhaps with notes on food or tasting circumstances?

I'd love to know your perspectives. Feel free to comment here, even if you normally just "lurk"!

Thanks,

Julian.

Mostly I think it helps to know what flavors, tastes, styles you like. That way if you like something, and we are similar in our likes, the review will be helpful. Since wine is so individual some reviews/tasing notes are really meaningless.

Thanks mate, that is helpful! Nice blog too, by the way!

Julian,

Please don't change a thing. I enjoy reading your notes. Very considered and thoughtful.

Thanks Edward, I appreciate the positive feedback. I sometimes wonder if I'm too verbose, but then it seems that my less wordy notes are not as well-received. ;)

Julian,

I read the comment about the bretty wine. Very rude. What does he mean by MD 20/20?

Do you read the wine reviews in the Weekend Financial Review? Whilst I like reading Tim White's articles and have done so almost compulsively for many years, I still find some of his wine descriptors very odd. Still I like his intention and the rigour he brings to his tasting notes.

I didn't know either, so I looked it up and apparently it's a cheap fortified wine-like thing that you can get in the US. :) I shall hunt some down.

You know, I've not read any of Tim White's notes, but you've piqued my interest and I'll check him out. A winemaker friend of mine once mentioned that she thought he had an excellent palate, for what that's worth.
